Today I even added intervals.  If you haven't ever worked out with intervals, you should do some research on it.  Apparently the way that they work means you burn 30% more calories and it your metabolism is affected for 12 hours after the workout.   Not to mention the extra endorphins!   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Intervals just means that you get your heart rate up to a high point and then let it go back again. It comes and goes and is triggered by lack of exercise and weighing more.  When I get to a certain weight it stops hurting.  I'm not at that weight right now but I really want to get there before I fly to Seattle in 3 weeks.  I'm about 12 pounds off, so I might not quite get there, but already I see improvements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because this was my specific goal, I decided to start tracking how long I could walk without pain.  The first day back on the treadmill I walked for seven minutes and the whole entire 7 minutes were horribly painful.  However, today I walked 13 minutes and eleven of those were pain free.  This is only my 8th day back at the gym and I've only lost 5 pounds, but it is amazing how much progress I've made!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm excited -- and happy to see Brenda is joining me. Back in September I started feeling icky and stopped going to the Y altogether and of course, by mid October, I had gained all but four of the pounds back that I had lost in the first part of 2011.  I was angry with myself and thus ate even more....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the first week of November I took a plane trip and walking in the airports nearly killed me because of back pain.  I didn't have another flight scheduled til the end of January, so I set a modest goal of losing 20 pounds by then.  I went back to the YMCA once that next week and could barely walk back to the van after I was done.  The next day it was discovered that I was in "A-fib" and even though the doctor told me that I could exercise, it made me nervous.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I tried to cut out some bad eating habits, and by last MOnday had lost two.  This past week I was back at the YMCA taking very small steps.  I started at only 7 minutes on the treadmill and increased a minute a day.  This week I'm trying to increase my speed a bit.  I lost three more pounds!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know how to lose weight.  I've done it before.  There are no miracles.  My Lap Band Surgery was so easy to cheat it didn't help.  The bottom line is that I have to eat less, eat the right things, and exercise.  it pretty much sucks that that is the only way to lose weight for me... but it is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, here we go again. Then 34 minutes on the cross trainer with a couple of intervals there too.  I'm feeling quite good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Came home and made myself a high-protein, low carb breakfast and I'm feeling quite good about that!   Today I head in to the lap band specialist -- he added some to my band about six weeks ago and now we're going to see how much I've lost and if I need an adjustment. I had a great workout -- 47 minutes, with 20 of them on the treadmill at 2.5 mph for with 5 intervals -- 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8.  The rest I did on the cross trainer, managing three intervals there....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Three years ago I had my best weight loss run ever, loosing about 43 pounds from March to October. Since then I have lost 28 pounds and am planning on losing the rest this year.  I'm going to have my lap band filled soon and hopefully that will assist me in this journey to get to a healthy weight for me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Went this morning and my goal is 200 minutes a week -- 5 x at 40 minutes each.  So one day is down, four to go this week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Who else plans for weight loss in 2011?  Want to report your progress somewhere?  How about here?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am going to start the one habit per week thing that helped so much in 2008.  This week I am replacing all pop with water (again.... Kari had indicated she wasn't going to come to the Y with me and I decided I just didn't have what it took to go alone.  I went back to bed an finally decided that going to the Y couldn't possibly make me feel any worse than I already did.   So I went.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once I got on the bike, I couldn't make myself go to the treadmill so I stayed there an extra ten minutes.  And then I told myself when I got on the treadmill that I could stop whenever I wanted to, but I set it for the normal  20 minutes and I went ahead and finished it.  And I felt much better.  My head seemed to clear a little bit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I'm glad I went. Basically the principle is that you go real hard for a short time, and then let your heart rate get lower, and then push it back up again.    A couple years ago when I was doing so well with weight loss I was doing intervals and they really do work.  Plus it gives me something to do as I increase and decrease speed manually at various minute markers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I did a 20 minute interval workout, with 5 separate intervals, the highest being at 3.5  This was the best workout so far this round of weight loss, which I really am determined be my last.  I don't plan on seeing the number I saw on the scale today again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I'm down 3 more pounds this week, for a total of 15 in 3 weeks, which pleases me.  I know I'm going to have to work harder this week if I want to see the loss continue as I didn't try that hard this week with food choices, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BUt this is the kind of progress to make. I finish the time on the bike.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My eating the last few days has been horrible though.... I am getting plenty of water, but have slipped back to diet pop and an ocassional bad fast food meal.  Need to get back into not doing that if I'm going to reach that goal of losing 30 by Labor Day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm nervous about weighing on on Monday. Yes I had a good workout.  19 minutes at 2.6.  Each day a little better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bart made my favorite meal last night though -- Hay and Straw -- but I didn't have dessert and only had one piece of bread.  (OK, OK, so I had quite a bit of pasta). Managed to go 18 minutes at 2.5.... so in 2 weeks I've gone from 10 minutes at 1.7 to 18 minutes at 2.5.  Progress for sure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I lost 4 more pounds, making that 12 in 2 weeks.  Not complaining about that in any way.   I realize it won't stay up there like that for long, but it's fun while it lasts and very motivating.  I think I'm going to try to make it my goal to lose 30 in all by Labor Day.  That's doable... just 18 more pounds in 8 weeks. So far I've done it for almost 2 weeks.  The workouts are getting better.  I am still having trouble catching my breath sometimes, and I have back pain towards the end of the walk, but I'm determined to build back my strength.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I have been drinking a lot of water, which is very good for me when I diet.  IT's part of the formula. I have to keep working at this gradually, but I did sweat some more this morning. But this morning either it was a LOT hotter in there than usual, or I worked a lot harder!  I sweat like crazy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And, I lost 8 pounds!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Want to know the secret?  Retain water for lets say -- about 4 months -- and then take water pills.  It works wonders.  But hey, i'll take it.  And I'm sure that eating right, for the most part, and exercising 5 days last week didn't hurt.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have some new goals and a bit of renewed vision.   Look out, world... I"m hoping by the end of the summer I won't have to stop and catch my breath at the counter (and flirt with the 20 something desk clerk) on my way out.  He says it's a reachable goal. Embarrased to only be going 13 minutes at 2 mph when 2 years ago I was going 38 minutes with intervals at twice that speed.  But I have to take things one day at a time.   The rest of the 40 minutes I spend on the bike and it seems to work for me.  I do have some back time and some breathing issues, but I know if I push myself too hard I will most likely quit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, day four is done.  One more and I'll be done for the week.  And my food intake has been pretty good, have had lots of water, and only one pop this week.  BIG change from the last couple weeks.  I haven't had any caffeine either, another big change. I didn't feel quite as drained.  however, I think people must wonder how in the world I could work out when I can't even drag my butt up the stairs without breathing heavily when I'm done.  I keep telling myself to take it slow, one day at a time, and if today is a bit better than yesterday so be it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My eating is back under control and I'm not having pop (or soda, for those of you who don't know what pop is).  I've had water now... one vitamin water treat yesterday -- and one caffeine free iced tea.  Otherwise I"m just trying to get down 64 oz of water a day.  I don't mind water.  According to Dominyk, it tastes horrible, but I actually think water tastes fine. ;-)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Each day I am adding one minute on the treadmill and increasing my speed by .1 mph.  I know that sounds nuts, but since my surgery many things about my body just aren't the way they need to be. I am so out of shape.  I have until the end of August to get my blood sugars down, and i wanted to see PROGRESS in one day.  However, I did not even though I ate only what I should have yesterday and exercised and everything.  I realize it's going to take time, but wow, the time it is going to take is going to drive me crazy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh well, I'm doing it.  Even without seeing results after one day. I weigh more than I ever have in my whole life by 2 pounds.  I know a lot of it is water weight, but I am going to have to be very diligent now in getting this weight off.  I don't feel good when I weigh this much and it's just ridiculous.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you've followed this blog for very long, you know that 2 years ago i had a major episode of good health that lasted from March to October.  During that time I lost 47 pounds and felt great.  Now here I am at my heaviest.  The amount of self-loathing I have about this particular issue is off the charts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, every day is a new day, and so far this day has started well.  I got in the 40 minutes of exercise and am half way through my water bottle.  I have a bit more energy and I am ready to begin the climb again to get back to the person I was. We got to the Y and I dropped my keys but didn't know it.  I then went to the bathroom and had a very large ... what word should I use here .... turd?  piece of crap?  portion of a bowel movement? stuck half way in and half way out.   Now I don't usually talk about poop, even though many famous bloggers spend hours of time talking about it, but this was an unusual situation.  What to do what to do?  Fifteen minutes later I had not made any progress and Kari was thinking about coming back in to check on me.  Not being able to lodge it, I finally decided to go about my routine and did so, with surprisingly minimal discomfort.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the shower I dropped my soap, my pants fell into the water, and afterwards we discovered I had no keys.  Since we have only one key to the van and Bart is out of town, thus leaving my office locked, it wasn't looking to be a good day.  Kari OFFERED to go in and try to find them, and finally checked at the desk where they were, but I'm sure the guy back there was thinking (as Kari tried to determine if they were my keys or not) "why doesn't she get her fat butt in here and look for her own keys."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While I doing an inappropriate post anyway, you'd be pleased to know that Dominyk was obsessing about his "ball sack" last night and would not stop talking about all the aspects of it.  In addition, he wanted to sleep with his new toy gun.  Since I was letting him sleep with me, you can imagine how our our pillow talk went.   "Mom, my ball sack itches, and it's hanging weird. I'm not sure why, but I'll take it.  It could be water weight, or medication, or a messed up scale but all I know is that last WEdnesday the scale was 10.5 pounds higher than it was last week.  So I'm taking it as a victory and feeling like one of those 500 pound men on the biggest loser.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Except for the part where I'm not a man and I don't weigh quite 500 pounds, though a recent picture of me that I saw on Leon's girlfriend's Facebook would lead you to believe that I do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Went back to the Y this morning by 5 (though we refuse to go stand in line at the door with the others) and managed to spend 13 minutes on the treadmill, though my speed is low.  Just adding one minute per day seems really gradual, but it works.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This weeks fitness challenge is to drink at least 32 ounces of water a day.  This is half of what we are supposed to drink, but I thought we'd start it off slow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Everything we read tells us to drink more water and it works. That means I have to be at the Y by around 5 a.m.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did that yesterday and had more energy and was less tired all day than I've been in weeks.  And the funny thing is, I barely had what you would call a workout.  If you look back two years to July of 2008 &lt;a href="http://shrinkingslob.blogspot.com/2008/07/y-workout-this-morning.html"&gt;this was the kind of workout I was having&lt;/a&gt;.  Today I barely drug myself through 11 minutes on the treadmill at a HIGH of 2.5 mph, had back pain, couldn't breath well, etc.  I finished the 40 minutes on the bike.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But it helps me to remember that after two months of going to the Y, I had only achieved being on the treadmill for 28 minutes and had not necessarily been going that fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If anyone would like to join me, this is your fitness challenge from now until Monday.  Move today and then move tomorrow more than you did today.   I am intending to add one minute to my treadmill time each day.  It's not much, but that is what I"m going to do.  If you are in REALLY bad shape, like I was a couple years ago, start by taking an extra trip up and down the stairs, or walking out to get the mail.  Then add something each day until Monday.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THe key for me is setting a very small reachable goal and then attaining it.  So choose something you can do and get 'er done.  Don't start out TOO energetic to where you don't have time or energy to add to it, but do something today and then do a tiny bit more tomorrow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Monday I"ll post a challenge for the next week.  At least that's the plan, Stan. One stupid little month of not paying attention, eating what I wanted, and nearly zero exercise and I have gained 16 pounds.  I am completely out of shape, barely making 10 slow minutes on the treadmill this morning (having to finish the 45 minutes on the bike).  My back hurts, I"m out of breath, and I'm incredibly angry with myself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But this morning I did it.  I was up at 4:40, and at the Y by 5:00 and now I"m home and showered. I'm trying to go slow as my lung capacity is still a bit compromised. It would be really nice if between segments I didn't gain back everything, but thinking about that is just going to make me crabby.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Overslept this morning but was proud of myself -- made it from being dead asleep to being outside &lt;a href="http://www.thoughtspreserved.blogspot.com"&gt;Kari's&lt;/a&gt; front door in 8 minutes.  Spent the 40 minutes on the bike as no treadmills were available (though when I do get back on the treadmill I'm going to have to start real slow -- my lungs still aren't completely recovered from the pneumonia).  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;But I was pleased to make it there and back since a couple weeks ago I couldn't have even made it from the van into the YMCA.  SLow but steady progress is what I'm hoping for.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;This week I'm beginning to change my eating habits.  This week I will transition my breakfast into what works for me.  One Special K bar (90 calories) and two cheese sticks and water or ice tea. Well, actually, let me rephrase that.  I love being back home and showered having my exercise out of the way by 6:30.  It feels so good to know that I've got my 40 minutes in already.  I usually have a lot of energy and am ready to face my day.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;This morning I weighed in and surprisingly only gained 11 pounds in the past several months.  When I was in the hospital it appeared that I had gained 29, but the difference in scales and my water retention must have made the numbers that high.  I'm actually only up 11 and that is much more encouraging.  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I'm ready to start the downward trek again, incredibly angry at myself for losing the momentum 18 months ago.   Two years ago last week I started my own fitness plan that helped me lose 43 pounds in about 4 months.  It involved nothing new or unique -- just diet and exercise.  It's time to do it again. I got in my 40 minutes.  But afterwards the family/special needs locker room where &lt;a href="http://www.thoughtspreserved.blogspot.com"&gt;she&lt;/a&gt; and I shower was full of preschoolers single Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (I kid you not) as their program people showered them one by one.  Now had Kari been with me like she was supposed to be, I would definitely have not done this.  She is never going to see me naked.  I would have packed up and come home to shower.  But somehow I convinced myself that i could hastily shower in the regular locker room without anyone seeing me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I quickly stripped in a quiet corner, put a towel in front of me (no, it won't go around me thank you very much) and headed to the gang shower, which was empty.  I found a place for my towel, and turned the water on and there I was, BUCK naked, when lap swimming ended and in came the group.  They have to walk through the gang shower to get into the locker room so every single one of them was privy to my very large, very naked body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had the fastest shower known to mankind.  Seriously.  I could give you much more detail about this, but really, I think it would embarrass even me.    And then I rushed back to my little corner where, low and behold, I realized that in my haste I had simply dropped my clothes into a pile and a very fit, very young, very not fat, fully clothed girl was standing at her locker which was next to my dirty underwear on the floor which, of course, according to Murphy's law, was crotch up.    I hurriedly dressed and packed my bag in embarrassment, only to discover that I had put my glasses in the bag first, so I had to dig everything out to find them.  When I finally had them out, I left, in shame, confused and frustrated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And did I go to Burger king? I know this is a lot for a first step, but for me it isn't.  I have done this before, I can do it again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The idea of the habit challenge is that we have one habit to conquer each week.  The weeks go from Monday to Sunday.  If I accomplish the habit this week, I add a new one next week.  If I don't, I try again next week. But Slowly</title><content type='html'>I have concluded that the reason that my journey to health went so well last time around is that it was gradual.  Even though I know where I want to be, I know that if I don't get there slowly it isn't going to happen.  If I deprive myself of everything immediately I won't stick to it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I have decided that every week I am going to add something to my routine (or take something away) that results in better health.  I think this will be more helpful than the way I have been doing things lately, which is planning for a huge health makeover to take place... starting Monday (so I better eat all I can now).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first step is going back to the YMCA which I did this morning. She's 14 and she still calls me mommy sometimes.  Nobody else has done that in years, but it's sweet.  So while we were heading to the Y this morning (&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;without&lt;/span&gt; &lt;a href="http://www.thoughtspreserved.blogspot.com"&gt;Kari&lt;/a&gt; I must add) she asks me, "Do you like getting up and going to the Y?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I responded with a "No, not really.  But I like not going less."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Confusing her I had to explain.  I don't like exercise.  Period.  And I don't like getting up at the crack of dawn.  But I do like how I feel after I go.  I explained to her about endorphins, and how important it was for me to get some time to gather my thoughts before I had to deal with the onslaught of teenage hormones, especially during the school year.   I told her that I had tons of energy until mid-afternoon if I got up and got moving early in the morning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also explained that sometimes I give myself a really hard challenge at the Y -- like going at 4 mph for a solid three minutes and pushing my heart rate up over 160.  That way if I can make myself do it, I figure I have conquered one hard thing in the morning and I can conquer anything else that day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So no, I don't like to get up and go to the Y.  But I like what it does for me and how I feel afterwards.  And I've gotten to the point now that the days I don't go are sluggish and icky -- thus, I like not going less than I like going.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And, to top it all off, when Kari does go with me we have a great time.  We cut up and laugh and talk about serious stuff and do all kinds of interactive things.   My friend Jill, who does not blog, mentioned that I am too serious lately in my writing, but it's because I'm overwhelmed, not because I'm not still flippin HILARIOUS.  ;-)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just ask Justin.  He's the 20 something kid that works the early shift at the Y three days a week. Except that now she is ahead. My weight went steadily down as I gained momentum and now that I am starting to gain it's going the other way.  I am so frustrated with myself for allowing this to happen. When I do I have a lot of energy for hours afterwards, I feel great, and I'm empowered to do more.  I have a sense of pride and accomplishment.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;But I &lt;b&gt;always &lt;/b&gt;regret it when I choose not to do it.  Last night &lt;a href="http://www.thoughtspreserved.blogspot.com"&gt;Kari&lt;/a&gt; wasn't feeling well and I should have gone to the Y without her this morning, because after all, I went for months without her last year, but I used that as an excuse.  And last night, when she had her husband call me to say she couldn't come, I just want it to be known that I referred to her as a spineless wimp not because she was sick and possibly puking, but because she had Mike call to let me know.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"&gt;Anyway, I digress.  So the bottom line is, I don't know why I ever let myself skip a day.  I always regret it when I do and then I'm crabby and unmotivated when I sleep in.  Not learning from my mistakes.  Good grief. I didn't realize</title><content type='html'>That it had been since April since I had posted.  That's scary.  Unfortunately, I gained 10 pounds during that time as well, but this last week lost 2.  So I'm eight more than I was a couple months ago and not happy at all.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I'm determined to get back on things.  When I left for NYC a year ago I was at an all time low of my life and now I am 23 pounds heavier than that.  I'm going to see the same friend I saw last year who was a big part of motivating me on this journey, and I'm determined to not be heavier at least.  I'd love to be just a few pounds lighter, but am realizing that probably isn't going to happen.  I'm annoyed with myself for gaining some of it back.  The nice thing is that I did not get to the point where I was having back pain again.  I didn't gain it all back.  And I'm still only 8 pounds away from the lightest I had been in about 15 years.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;So here we go again.  Went to the Y at 5 with&lt;a href="http://www.thoughtspreserved.blogspot.com"&gt; Kari&lt;/a&gt; and Sadie and her friend joined us.  Not a great workout, but better than nothing. I decided not to spend too much time making it look realistic, cuz it just ain't gonna look realistic... trust me.  But it was a lot easier making her face fit on my body than the other way around.  (and yes, of course I had to use the picture of me at my heaviest.  Why wouldn't i? Do you think it should alarm me that the caller was sobbing, literally sobbing, because she ways nine pounds LESS than I do?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did lose a pound or two (can't remember what I weighed last time it's been so long) and I was really excited because if figured I had gained at least five. I did NOT want to get up this morning, but when i was done I was really glad I had.  It was a good workout and now i"m more ready for my day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm even motivated to get back on track now.  I think I'm going to look at a year ago on this blog and copy what I was doing then. Actually, it isn't mine completely, but it is the one I signed up for.  ANd you'd think that me, Ms. Assertive, would easily be able to walk up to her and say, "hey, I signed up for this one" but instead I just sat on the bike and glared at her very very very skinny butt.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I thought, Hey, I need that WAY more than you, can't you TELL?  I swear she weighed maybe 120 soaking wet, pregnant, and after a huge salty meal where she was retaining water. I neglected to blog on Friday or yesterday, but we were there both days doing good cardio workouts. Felt good to have it done.  Now I just need to get rid of the headache.  I'm not losing weight yet, but hoping that getting back on track will make me feel better anyway. I love that feelign.  I gained 2 pounds this week, but I am just telling myself it's muscle.  I'm trying to focus on the positives and not the negatives. I love the feeling I get when I am done.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today was kind of an off day -- &lt;a href="http://www.thoughtspreseved.blogspot.com"&gt;Kari &lt;/a&gt;went with me and she gets me all hyper and I forget stuff.  Like today I forgot my water bottle and left it in the van, had no Y card, didn't bring a comb -- and then my favorite treadmill was busy for a while (as were most of them) so I only had 20 minutes there and 20 on the bike.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Plus, I had to stand next to a skinny person who was running and those really skinny people, you know the ones I'm talking about, the ones in perfect shape, they just grate on my nerves sometimes.  Today I looked over at her cool down speed and it was higher than my maximum speed.  And then she did this little thing where she rode the treadmill to the end and hopped off.  Here I hold on for dear life as I move my feet off the thing worried I'll fall off.  Sigh.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I got in the workout and showered and feel great.  And I did drink about 20 oz of water on my way home.  So the day is off to a great start.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have been participating in a challenge with &lt;a href="http://myebenezer.net/2009/02/19/less-of-me/"&gt;Cindy in Tx&lt;/a&gt; who is challenging me.  My rules for the week have been, starting Monday, as follows:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;40 minutes of Cardio MWF&lt;br /&gt;40 minutes of strength training (weight machines)  TThS&lt;br /&gt;Check blood sugar daily&lt;br /&gt;64 oz of water a day&lt;br /&gt;no pop of any kind&lt;br /&gt;no fries or fry substitutes&lt;br /&gt;10 squats per day&lt;br /&gt;only one dessert per week&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So far this week I've made it each day.  Next week I get to choose the rules. Saturday I did weight lifting  at the Y, adding five pounds to each weight machine,  and today I was back there doing cardio -- interval workout -- and taking my shower.  I love taking my shower there.  It's such a nice, clean controlled environment.  I can even use nice shampoo that nobody has messed with. While I was doing that I listened to a fitness podcast and &lt;a href="http://www.noexcusesworkouts.com/"&gt;my online personal trainer &lt;/a&gt; Jonathan Roche was talking about how you feel is what makes people determine how fat you are.  Now, mind you, I am not going to ever suggest that people are going to look at me and say, "OOOOH, she is SOOOOO skinny."  That would be, well, stupid.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, I noticed something.  Back in July I hit a plateau for about two months.  But I was still working out and eating right anyway.  During those whole two months people were saying "Wow, you look so good!  You've lost some more haven't you."  And I had to admit that I was not.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;About the time that I stopped working out, people stopped commenting.  And nobody has said anything for a while.  Last week I started going back to the gym and for the first time in about 3 months people at church said something on Sunday.  So I think there may be something to what Jonathan is saying.  If I feel like a fat, sedentary, lazy, unmotivated slob I may just look like one.  If I feel like a motivated, in control of my life, energetic queen of fitness, I probably look like one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This morning when I was on the treadmill I began to get that feeling I remember so well.  That feeling that nothing is impossible, that I can do anything if I try. Got my cardio done today -- 40 minutes of it, and I've had 30 oz of water already this morning. I wanted to download the shows and watch them on my computer, but I haven't even had time to do that.  So yesterday I put them on my Iphone and watched an episode from the treadmill on my Iphone.  Wow, was that ever a good idea.  In fact, I was so into the show that I walked an extra 18 minutes -- I exercised for 58 minutes!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm doing it again today. It's bout how I feel when I do accomplish a goal . . . about how my spirit feels when I conquer myself.  I had gotten to the point by July where I was on top of the world and then it all just slipped...... fortunately it didn't slip completely far, as I only gained back 9 pounds...(on the 22nd I used a different scale, but this Monday I went to the Y). in the past it has been gaining back 20 or 30 or 40 or 60 or gaining back more than I had previously lost, so at least I can feel better about catching myself before it was too late.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now that I'm moving back in that direction again I can already feel some of the emotional benefits.  I had sunk into a very unproductive slothful existence just like I had been before I started to exercise.  I am looking forward to having some of the energy back that comes from exercising, but most importantly, I am looking forward to feeling the empowerment that comes from taking on myself and winning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hey, me, you better watch out! This morning I was crabby as all get out by the time I got to the Y.  &lt;br /&gt;The day didn't start well.  Salinda insisted we needed to go to the Y at 5 (when I was planning to go at 8:30)  but then didn't get up, so I ended up going back to bed and not sleeping for 30 minutes before I got up to get work done.  Let's just say that the morning routine was not smooth this morning and by the time they were all in school and I was heading to my workout, I was not in good shape.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then when I got there, I found I had gained 3.5 pounds which made me even crabbier.   The plan I'm working says I have to do 30 minuets on the treadmill, using intervals.  I spent nearly the whole time on the treadmill slamming myself with negative self-talk.  I almost got off with 18 minutes to go because my knee started acting weird.  That stopped but then a guy stepped on to the treadmill next to me smelling of smoke.  Almost got off because of that.  I just kept telling myself to quit early and that it was going to be a lousy day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But by the time I was done with the workout, I had a plan for the day that included getting a few things done. This morning, i went to the Y after dropping of the kids for school and did an interval workout that was pretty strenuous. It seemed to work much better as I knew I wasn't going to be able to make myself go out into the cold and darkness at 5 a.m.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did intervals -- 30 minutes, working on heart rate now that I have a monitor and know what my AT is.  It was a good workout.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I lost another pound!!! Not a bad way to strengthen my arms if I can't get down on the ground.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Used my 5 pound weights to strengthen my arms as well...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;and spent some time on the Wii Fit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wore my new heart rate monitor and none of the things I did today got my heart rate up much. He has the No Excuse Weight Loss System and I have been using his tips and encouragement since June.  I recently joined the &lt;a href="http://www.momentumfs.com/"&gt;Momentum Fitness System&lt;/a&gt; as Bart bought it for me for my birthday.  I have enjoyed being able to post my workouts and receiving so much encouragement from the program.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This morning I needed to know where I could find a workout that I can do in a chair.  His No Excuses six minute workout is done from the ground, and I still can't get up and down from the floor very easy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In fact, the only time I tried it, I tried to do one pushup, and pulled the muscle that is attached to a lung or something -- just my luck.  Not like I could stop breathing to avoid the pain.  Only I would pull THAT particular muscle.  Anyway, I digress.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So this morning I emailed the support team and none other than the famous Jonathan himself emailed me back.  We've had a nice interchange this morning and I sort of feel like I have received a personal email from a celebrity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The one thing that is most amazing about Jonathan is that he has the natural gift of encouragement.  His kindness and empathy are so genuine and apparent in what he writes and in everything he says (he has a weekly call in show that I listen to on my IPhone while I work out).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So today Jonathan sent me a personal email that I received after my workout. I lost another 1/2 pound this week and went to the Y yesterday and then worked out on a new Wii game yesterday.  Today, having finally bought a heart rate monitor, I went to the YMCA again.  For some reason I haven't been making it there as regularly lately.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I saw the numbers that were my targets I figured I could never do it, but I certainily did.  I'm feeling quite proud of myself at the moment.  I don't know why I don't make myself get up and do this 3 or 4 times a week like I used to. The travelling and then coming home with a sore back, guests sleeping in the family room where the Wii Fit is located, people over for dinner..... all not a good combination.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The good news is that I did not gain any weight this week and that I'm back on track this morning.  Last night I walked with Bart and this morning I was at the Y at 5:20.  Did my 40 minute interval workout and came home raring to go for the day.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hopefully this week I can really start watching what I eat again and get in my workouts and maybe I can start losing like I was before.... I'm tired of the plateau.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But at least i'm not gaining it back which has been my pattern. I was really surprised.  I almost didn't get up and go to the Y today, but I hadn't missed going on a Monday in 7 months, so I had to do it, even though I hadn't been for an entire week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I am officially at the lowest weight I can remember since 1994.... another 10 pounds or so and I'll be lower than I can remember since 1988.... Well, it finally came, but i had pointed him to the wrong page of the website, so he ordered the one withOUT the heart monitor.  However, the system seems as though it will be motivating.  It has a web-based software program where you record your workouts and weight loss and you can earn prizes and join challenges and everything.  I've been listening to his call in radio show for several months and been using his interval workouts, so I am hoping this will continue to help me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did not work out yestereday or today and I am feeling it. That means that since last week I've lost six pounds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I thought about going back and checking the scale again to make sure, but decided against it.  I figured that even if it was a lie, I could bask in it for a week and be disappointed next week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've been doing two things differently that, if it is accurate, may be contributing to it. I've been trying to have something to eat within one hour of getting out of bed.  Apparenty this jumpstarts the metabolism. I'm getting a little better at it and after I finish some strength training and such on the Wii I've been working on improving my dance moves.   It gets my heart rate up, so that's the point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Glad I'm alone though. I'm so annoying.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, I did go to teh Y this morning and did half of an interval workout -- no treadmills were free for the first 20 minutes I was there....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last night I walked with Bart.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yesterday morning I got on the Wii Fit for a bit and then did DDR - HOttest Party for a few minutes.  That can really get the heart rate up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So that's my report.  Oh yeah, and I have done pretty well with food so far this week.  No desserts, not too many carbs, snacking between meals to keep metabolism flowing.  I'm trying to follow the 15 secrets of weight loss that my online personal trainer&lt;a href="http://www.momentumfs.com/"&gt; Jonathan Roche &lt;/a&gt;recommends.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I'm still not doing things as well as I'd like. I have gained another pound and now I am just mad.  So, I'm going to have to channel that anger into something positive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did my 40 minute workout -- 7 minute warm up on bike, 30 minute interval workout (3.5 incline, 4.4 pushing, 2.8 recovery), 3 minute cool down.  For some reason my back is hurting today, but I did the workout anyway.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have decided to have an all out war -- attacking the weight this week and trying not to slip up on anything.  My take it or leave it approach to a lot of the habits I had incorporated this spring and summer is really hurting me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So that's my plan.  I'm going to do everything I'm supposed to do for 7 days and see if it makes a difference.  Sigh. I got up at 5 and made it to the Y by 5:25.  I did my 40 minute interval workout:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 6 minutes on bike&lt;br /&gt;30 minutes on treadmill -- 3.0 incline, 4.3 mph exertion, 2.8 mph for recovery times...&lt;br /&gt;4 minutes on bike&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hated getting up.  I hated crawling out of my warm bed and heading out into what is every day a colder world.  I hated driving there and mumbled to myself about how it was so early and I was so tired and how I should have gone to bed earlier....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And while on the treadmill I was moaning to myself as well.... so hard to get moving, hate this, why am I doing this ... grrrr.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But, when I was done, I LOVED the feeling.  I have tons more energy.  I was home in time to shower and get ready, with 15 minutes to spare to blog before waking up the children.  I feel positive about my day.  My body feels energized.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have noticed that the reverse is true from what I would expect.  (I know, that's a stupid sentence, but I'm too lazy to go back and change it.  However, in the time it took me to write that it was a stupid sentence, I could have gone back and fixed the sentence, and now, for sure, explaining that in the time it took for me to tell you that I acknowledge that the time that I used to explain I was lazy, I certainly could have fixed the sentence..... oh well).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would expect that on the nights when I sleep 8 hours and do not exercise, I would feel more rested during the day as my body would not be as tired.  But the reverse is true. I am excited that we will have some support going on and I believe we are off to a great start. I did go to the Y on Monday morning, had gained 2.5 pounds.  But I had a good workout and then walked with Bart at lunchtime and again at night.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yesterday morning I had a workout on the Wii Fit that was pathetic and walked again last night.  But this morning I could not make myself do anything and I'm regretting it.  I had my alarm set to go to the Y, but it didn't happen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But my eating is so unhealthy and I just can't seem to get back on track.  I have a few ideas of how I am going to do that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1)  Set My October Goals.  For October, I am going to only have one dessert a week.  I've been letting this slip, having a bite of this and a bite of that and it's not helping me in any way.  If I cut them out all together, it is demoralizing, so once a week I can have one sweet thing....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2)  Create a yahoo group for parents of kids with special needs who are trying to lose weight.  I think being the moderator of a group like that might help me to go back into the mode of where I felt like I was a role model and doing what I was supposed to do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3)  I'm going to try to limit my eating out -- we don't have the money anyway.... but sometimes it's just easier.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, we'll see how it goes.  I simply cannot let this weight come back on. Having my workout done and my shower with a few minutes to spare before the kids get up always gives me a better start to my day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Weighed in again.  Gained 1.5 pounds, but it is no surprise the way I've been eating. And I shopped at the mall.  And things fit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Grant it, they were still the largest sizes available at the mall, but for so many years there has been nothing that has fit me even in the Plus Size Stores.  So this was quite the victory.  I still hate shopping, but he says it's a cute outfit.  Maybe if I remember I'll have him take a picture today and I"ll post it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also found out that walking on the moving walkways is quite speedy.  I used to have to lean on the rail to recover from my back pain .... today I just moved right along free of pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And as I posted on my other blog, I didn't need a seatbelt extension.  A few minor victories, but victories nonetheless.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So even though I'm not watching what I eat at the moment and not losing, I'm not gaining. No loss, no gain.  Whew, no gain.  I ate like there was no tomorrow for 4 days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And for my birthday I got "Dance Dance Revolution:  Hottest Party Ever" and was very excited to start working out on it.  Spent some time on it yesterday afternoon and again last night and some more time this afternoon. In the last 3 months I don't think there has been a week gone buy where I haven't exercised at least 4 times a week, sometimes as many as 7. I am kind of getting addicted to seeing the words **Perfect** slash across my screen again and again and again.  It's very rewarding.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I beat my high score (which was also the family high) on the Advanced Steps game and beat the family score on the Beginning Boxing game (and you think you're all that, Leon!)  Spent 41 minutes on it, when 30 was all I planned, but I just wanted to beat that high score...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A couple other interesting tidbits of news.  I felt something last night.  It was a bone. Yes, I am forcing him to go, but he doesn't seem to mind it as much as I thought he might.  I'm hoping he will build on success.  He has been going back at night to lift weights, so he seems to be somewhat motivated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did intervals for 30 minutes at 4.0 incline with 4.5 mph -- and on the last 2 intervals, 4.6 the fastest I've ever gone.  It is really close to running, but the incline makes it more like very fast walking...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have been going at 5:30 but that is limiting my time in the morning before the kids get up.  Might have to start going earlier next week.
