The Date is Set

I told myself that as soon as I had a surgery date I would create this blog. On January 16th, I am going to allow a surgeon to stop me from eating myself into an early diabetic death, plagued by kidney failure, blindness, and ulcerated feet.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes in April, I was told that I could control it by diet and exercise, two things that I have been allergic to for decades. The first three months, I did an excellent job. I lost 18 pounds, kept my blood sugars down, and had meals like 1/2 slice toast with pure fruit jam and 1/4 cup of milk and 3 almonds. I ate like that consistently and it worked but I hated it.

The second three months I didn't try as hard. I didn't lose any weight, and I didn't gain any either, and even though we travelled a lot, I kept my blood sugars fairly OK.

The third three months I just got plain crabby. I hated eating cardboard and grass and so I would do things just to demonstrate that I do have ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) and that nobody was going to tell ME what to eat.

My doctor told me about Lap Band Surgery. Basically it stops morbidly obese people from eating too much without chopping up their internal organs. I decided, for the sake of my husband and children, that I better get it done.

I have had a bad back for 19 years and can’t exercise much. My obesity has never defined me, but it certainly hasn’t helped me in any way. Time to do something about it and since I have proven I can’t control it, I must have someone control it for me.

So, I’ll blog my journey with it and we’ll see how it goes. I’m making sure that I have a REALLY high starting weight...
